Indian Reservations

The southern part of Costa Rica has several Indian reservations where you can observe the indigenous people who were the original inhabitants of this beautiful land.

The Guaimí Indian Reservation is located in Villa Palacios, Coto Brus, which is 7 km from Sabanilla, en route to San Vito. They have preserved their traditions, native dress, physical features and customs. Their language is the Guaymie, but many of them also speak Spanish. They cultivate cocoa, coffee, beans, corn, and palmito. They are devoted mainly to agricultural activities, although they also spend alot time creating handmade native crafts, which are sold as souvenirs; such as ceramics, handbags, and articles made of natural fibers and leaves, dyed with natural dyes of various colors. There is an Indian Community Museum where they create and sell these handmade arts and crafts.

The Cabagra Indian Reservation is located in San Rafael, 35 km north of El Brujo, Canton of Buenos Aires and represents the culture of the Bibrí Indians who are devoted mainly to agricultural activities. In this reservation there is the Indian Community Museum de Cabagra Ste Wë (the Bribri spirit).

Boruca Indian Reservation: Located in Buenos Aires of Puntarenas, 20 km from the Panamerican Highway. The Boruca Indian Reservation also has a museum where they exhibit the processes and techniques of their handmade crafts, using natural dyes. The construction of the building is typical of the traditional houses used by the Boruca Indians.
