Cave Exploring

Where?: 1) Saavegre of Perez Zeledon. You get here by way of San Isidro de General, Perez Zeledon. From there you travel northwest for about two hours until you arrive at Savegre, a small community nestled high in the mountains. You will then need to travel by horseback for some 3 hours to the caves. Here you will find tours, with lunch and guide provided, as well as lodging.

2) in Herradura de Rivas de Perez Zeledon.

Where to stay?:
1)  Saavegre is not a complete tourist destination yet, but you can always expect a very cordial and warm welcome, as the Ticos are a very kind people. In Savegre, there are no hotels or cabins, but the owners of the caves offer lodging if you would like.

2) In Herradura there are several mountain hotels that offer lodging when visiting the area.

What to do?: Spelunking, Hiking in the mountains, Horseback riding, Bird watching, and Camping.

The two locations where there are caverns in Perez Zeledon are surrounded by dense vegetation and there are many animals and birds to observe. For nature lovers, this is probably your best option.

The experience can include horseback riding, as it may be necessary to get to the caves, or surrounding areas by horse. In Herradura you will be able to visit San Gerardo of Rivas, where there is a regional museum of art, as well as the private nature reserve "CloudBridge". Or you can hike to the peak of Mount Chirripó, since the National Parks office, which authorizes access to the mountain is in San Gerardo. You can also visit the Hot Springs in this area.

From Savegre, you may decide to travel the road through the mountain that eventually meets up with the coastal highway, near Parrita or Quepos. This route if very scenic, but pretty rough, and 4 wheel drive is required.
