A craftsman of roots and branches. PDF Print E-mail

A craftsman of roots and branches.

Interview to Don Rafael Elizondo Badilla.

Natural Museum in Southern Costa Rica

He is called an artist, and I call his work Art; but he names himself a craftsman. When one sits to talk to Don Rafael, little by little, one begins to see things from a very different perspective.

He shows you a tree's branch and tells you it is an iguana. He watches a stone and says: "Look! Can you see the little face here!" Wow! His vision and perspective of things are incredible.

As he says, he likes stones because they are testimony of Creation, all of them have a meaning for him.

On his farm, there are many stones with face shape and also with animals and birds, regarding indigenous stones. Don Rafael can see the difference among them, with no difficulty, thanks to the fact that all of them have singular and specific characteristics.

When he was 39, a nephew gave him a tree's branch with a cricket shape. Since then, Don Rafael has been looking for shapes in trees' roots and branches. A little time after, he began his collection; he was invited to have an exhibition in his town. A visitor asked him to present his material in Pérez Zeledón. He did it, and found a lot fans. Among them, we can mention Don Enrique Arce, who wrote an article about his work for Estrella del Sur newspaper. Don Rafael commented that this article encouraged him very much, making him take his work more seriously.

Nowadays, he is an artist in wood. He has sold some of his creations to people in the U.S.A., Spain, Luxembourg, Colombia and other countries. Today, his collection is growing fast.

He and his children are building a museum of craft, in the Pelican Hotel, where you will be welcomed to meet Don Rafael, and do many other activities that you will be able to enjoy in the hotel or in the area.

But, why don't look and appreciate his art closer?
