The road towards the Festival of Lights of the Valley has already begun. This past Sunday, December first, the Christmas tree was lit up in the park of San Isidro del General, preparing the way for the festival that is to come, and has already be inaugurated. The Festival of Lights has at last come to Pérez Zeledón!

The tree has many light bulbs on it – 1800 to be exact, and all of them were lit up this past Sunday to celebrate the inauguration of the Festival of Lights of the Valley. The tree is seven meters tall.

The mayor of Pérez Zeledón, Vera Corrales, was present, along with many other residents of the southern region of Costa Rica, and she took advantage to ask the community to contribute to a pro animal life program which exists to help animals that have been abused

Now that the tree was lit up, there are several more activities that will follow, as is tradition in Costa Rica. There will be a cultural night, the famous “tope,” which is a type of parade for horses and riders, a parade of floats and marching bands, and an athletic race at night.

The Festival of Lights is a time of joy and celebration, and there are many activities which are allusive to Christmas and the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ. The first Festival of Lights celebration was on December 13th, 1996. It took place at Paseo Colón and Second Avenue. The parade went on for over three kilometers
