This forest reserve is made up of a tropical rain forest and protects all timber -wood species in the geographic zone that surrounds the Golfo Dulce in the southern zone of Costa Rica, such as: lapas [type of parrots], toucans, trogones, monkeys, pizotes, tolomucos, anteaters and others.

 This forest reserve is made up of a tropical rain forest and protects all timber -wood species in the geographic zone that surrounds the Golfo Dulce in the southern zone of Costa Rica, such as: lapas [type of parrots], toucans, trogones, monkeys, pizotes, tolomucos, anteaters and others.

This region, where the forest connects with the sea at the river mouths, has impressive mangrove swamps, and is a breeding area for many marine species.

The Gulf measures approximately 55 x 12 km. Its greatest depth is approximately 210m and is filled with a vast diversity of species, such as dolphins, manta rays, eels, schools of fish, pelicans, seagulls, as well as adult and baby humpback whales, who pass through the area during the months of December through May.

It is one of the few places in the world where you can enjoy the shade of a tropical forest from a kayak or boat and at the same time see congo monkeys, white faced monkeys, toucans, or lapas [parrots], or swim in its crystalline waters.
