It’s the priority of Oro Verde Ecotourism Biological Reserve to focus on our culture in the conservation and appreciation of the natural resources, as well as keeping excellent human relations in and out of our business.

Oro Verde Ecotourism Biological Reserve consists of 6 Costa Rican brothers and 1 foreigner. We have an administrative manager, a permanent bi-lingual guide and 4 temporary eco-guides. The 5 eco-guides posses a high level of knowledge about ecotourism, plants and animals, as well as forming a part of the history of our reserve, given that they have lived all of their life here.

Description of the Costa Rica ecotourism services that we offer:

Ecological Tours

Pajareo, Oro Verde Ecotouristic Biological Reserve1. Bird watching ecotour:
It begins at 6 am or if agreed upon at 2 pm. The majority of the tour is walking the trails thru the secondary forest as well as to the bird look out tower. It will be lead by a specialized guide. Upon completion of the tour we offer you a typical Costa Rican breakfast, which consists of rice and beans(Gallo Pinto), scrambled eggs, fried bananas, homemade tortillas, fruit, coffee or a natural drink. The tour lasts 3 hours.

2. Exploring the primary forest:
This tour leaves at 6 am or if agreed upon at 1 pm. Pajareo, Oro Verde Ecotouristic Biological ReserveThe guests will be able to hike the trails of the secondary and primary forests. During the hike the specialized guide will be offering information concerning the history of the reserve, as well as information on the plants and wildlife that are present in the reserve. The guests will be able to identify the characteristics of both types of the forests that they visit. During the hike you will come across areas of water (ravines), bird watching sites, and panoramic views. At the end of the tour we offer you the typical Costa Rican lunch, which consists of rice and beans (Gallo Pinto), meat (optional), vegetables, salad (potatoes, chayote, papaya or flower of itabo) and a natural drink. It’s important to know that the hike is difficult at times and is recommended for people in good shape. This tour lasts 4 hours.

3. Horseback ride:
This tour begins at an agreed upon time among the guests. It’s important to know that your reservations must be made at least 1 day before the tour. For this tour you have 2 options: Riding thru the mountains or ride to the Morete River. During the ride thru the mountains the specialized guide will be offering information concerning the plants and wildlife that are present on the reservation. You will be visiting sites of great scenic beauty and panoramic views. The ride to the Morete River will take place on the local San Josecito Hiking, Oro Verde Ecotouristic Biological Reservetrail, which has beautiful birds. And you will learn the history of the town of San Josecito. If the guests would like they can take a swim and cool down at the Morete River. The specialized guide will accompany the guests at all times. Both options (the forest/mountain or the Morete River) last 3 hours

4. Short walk:
This tour begins at an agreed upon time by the guests. The specialized guide will offer information about the plants and wildlife. The walk is mainly in the secondary forest and is not difficult. This tour lasts 2 hours.

5. Trapiche:
The objective is for the guest to learn the traditional “grinding of the sugar cane”. This process consists of extracting the juice from the sugar cane, which is then boiled for aboTrapiche, Oro Verde Ecotouristic Biological Reserveut 8 hours, and finally it is put in “tamugas” or molds to obtain the final product; tapas de dulce. The actual demonstration is only of the extracting part of the process, and the special guide will explain the rest of the process to the guests, along with a historical review. This demonstration is included with all of the previously mentioned tours, however it is necessary to make previous reservations.

6. Natural pools:
The Biological Reserve has several natural pools of various depths, from half a meter to 6 meters deep. Our guests can cool down in the natural pools after each of the tours if they wish. With pleasure they will be accompanied by a specialized guide.

For persons interested in spending more time in our reserve, we have available our cabin, which requires reservations at least a day before being used, or if agreed upon the reservations can be made the same day, at least 3 hours before.

8. Transportation:
Oro Verde does usually transport guests, however in the case of emergencies where the guests have no way to arrive to the Reserve, we may be able to offer the service. It’s important to make clear that this service is not always available, and because of the location of our reserve, our transportation could be more expensive than that of others in our area. This is because the service we offer is with the vehicles of the family members of the Duartes. These vehicles are generally on the reserve, and for example, to pick someone up from Dominical, we’d have to drive double the distance.

The Ecotouristic Biological Reserve is found 16 kilometers from Dominical on the highway Costanera Sur, going towards Uvita the entrance will be on the left hand side marked by a sign. From the turn off it will be 3.5 kilometers. Or coming from Uvita towards Dominical it’s 4 kilometers until you arrive at the entrance on your right hand side, and 3.5 kilometers up the entry.

The reception is located at the coordinates 562 846 and 132 251 lambert Costa Rica North or at the world coordinates 9 12 16 and 83 45 39.

The Biological Reserve is found between 219 and 517 msnm

Mirador, Oro Verde Ecotouristic Biological ReserveInfrastructure

  • Reception building: Equipped to give the guests the warmest of welcomes, as well as offer our services of meals and information. It’s frequently used as a meeting room, given its attractive characteristics for such an activity (cozy and quiet, good lighting and resources for connecting presentation equipment, as well as food) If you wish to have a formal meeting (25 person maximum) you can make a reservation.
  • Eco-Cabin: they are found along the local path. They come with fans, 2 bathrooms, eating area, electric kitchen, basic cooking utensils, refrigerator, washing room, 2 bedrooms and a small pool.
  • Look out: has a capacity for 20 people and is found 6 meters above the ground. Its strategically placed in the secondary forest, where it’s most ideal for observing birds in his ecological ambient.
  • Trapiche: originally used by the Duarte Fonseca family more than 40 years ago. It’s found in perfect condition and adequate to have small demonstrations (the processing of sugar cane into a locally preferred sugar substance) for our guests.

Property

Oro Verde Ecotourism Biological Reserve is located in the Biological Reserve Oro Verde. This reserve consists of approximately 150 hectareas, where you will find some 7,850 meters of trails. The reserve consists of 80% primary forest and the other 20% is distributed among secondary forest and fields. The property has at least 8 natural springs and 2 ravines(Duarte ravine and Chico ravine).

Recommendations for our guests:

  • Light clothes and good footwear for walking
  • Binoculars and equipment for birdwatching
  • Follow strictly the instructions of the specialized guides.
  • Follow strictly the established hours for the departure of tours.
  • In the case of physical conditions or limitations please advise when you make your reservations or tell the specialized guide before the tour begins.
  • Guests that wish to do the horseback ride to Morete River should bring with them a swimsuit and towel.
  • After any tour the guests may refresh themselves in the natural pools adjacent to the reception area. It’s important to bring appropriate attire for this activity.
  • During the rainy season it’s recommended to bring rain jackets

Biological Reserve Oro Verde Volunteer Program

If you wish to learn about the culture of the country people of Costa Rica in addition to the natural beauty of the southern zone of Costa Rica and are ready to assist with the development of a local touristic project, you should read the following information.

This program intends to offer a rewarding experience to the volunteer and at the same time generate an important source of hand work inside of the Reservation. The volunteer will live with a Costa Rican family during there stay on the Reservation and they will be in direct contact with the activities that they are required to do daily on the Reservation.
