IN PERSUIT OF THE QUETZAL TOUR

SURIA LODGE offers you a marvelous tour where you will look for the Quetzal. The scientific name of this bird is pharomachrus mocinno. It measures 36 cm en length and weighs 210 grams. The male Quetzal can measure up to 64 cm., including its tail. You cannot mistake seeing it, even without its long tail, because the shape of its crest is that of a laterally compressed helmet. The crest extends itself forward covering the base of the beak and its breast is bright red. The female Quetzal and its young have no crest, but they have a distinctively striped tail and a grey breast. The Quetzal prefers the cloud forest which is humid and heavy with epiphytes in the canopy forest. The Quetzal is usually a solitary bird, but can be found in pairs, and at times the Quetzals can be founding a group together on a fruit-bearing tree, flying around to catch the smallest lizards and snails, especially during nesting season when they are feeding their young. The Quetzals prefer to eat various lauraceous such as the aguacatillo.

The Quetzal lives mostly in the cloud forest that has an altitude of at least 1200 meters as well as at 300 meters in the central mountain range of the Talamanca mountains. The Quetzal limits its upward climbs once it has its young. They may stay in areas that have been significantly deforested if the remaining trees contain enough food and nesting material. The Quetzal usually nests in dry trees such as the poró and the oak tree. They take advantage of the holes made by the woodpeckers that are over 3 meters deep to place their eggs safely inside the trunk of the tree. Then both male and female Quetzals will take care of and feed their young.

In San Gerardo de Dota, there is a 90% chance that the Quetzal can be observed year round. We have good guides and paths. For this observation tour, you should bring binoculars and good hiking shoes
