Giant Spheres to be Returned to Boruca
Several centuries ago, many stone spheres were created by some of the indigenous communities of Costa Rica. Today many of these spheres are exhibited at museums, but due to an agreement between the National Museum and the Association of Integral Development of the Indigenous Territory of Boruca, it was decided that three of them should return to their original home in Boruca. Three locations were selected for their placement: the museum, the elementary school, and the high school.
The three spheres are of good size. One of them has a diameter of 1.70 meters, and weighs five tons, while the others have one meter diameters. Archeological artifacts have never before been returned to their original communities – until now! They used to be in a museum in Pavas, but now they will reside at their place of creation.
This, of course, is very important for the Boruca community. These spheres are cultural symbols that represent their ancestral roots. They have wanted to receive them for a long time, but it had not been possible until now.
